Gujo Odori

Vendredi dernier il y avait un atelier "Gujo Odori" from Gujo Hqchiman au JCCC (Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre) de Toronto.

THE GUJO ODORI dance festival is one of the three most important traditional dance festivals in Japan, but it is also one of the most accessible in the country.

Endo Yoshitaka started the Gujo Odori festival in the Tokugawa Period over 400 years ago in an attempt to encourage all the town's citizens to get together, regardless of social level or position. This spirit remains today as the heart and soul of this popular summer dance festival.

For thirty-one festive nights, from mid-July until the first weekend in September, thousands of people dance the ten traditional odori or dances of the festival in the streets throughout the town. But for many, the most exciting time is the four nights of the festival, at "obon" in the middle of August, when revellers dance through the night until the morning sun begins to rise above the surrounding mountains.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in! And there are plenty of people eager to teach anyone interested in participating, the simple dance movements which are different from Western dance steps. Those interested in a more "structured" approach to learning the traditional dance movements can take afternoon dance lessons at the Gujo Hachiman Kinenkan Tourist Centre during Gujo Odori season. Certificates are presented to all who successfully complete the easy lessons!
For an authentic experience you can wear the light cotton traditional yukata and wooden geta sandals you will find in your room at all ryokans, or rent them from local kimono stores. But remember, jeans and sneakers are just as welcome! The point is to have fun, make new friends and experience traditional Japan in a way that is unique to Gujo Hachiman.

Je n'avais pas lu tout ça avant d'y aller! Ma prof de japonais nous en avait parlé, elle nous avait dit que c'était une "dance demonstration". bon bah oui pourquoi pas. J'vais envie d'y aller mais le JCCC est super loin!! hummm. Une madame de ma classe avait envie d'y aller et m'a proposé de m'y conduire vu que j'étais sur son chemin! Parfait! au moins on sera 2 à rien comprendre! ahah. On s'y rend donc sans savoir ce qui nous attend.

Le centre est assez grand, tout y est écrit en Japonais et Anglais. Il y a des photos des babioles, etc. C'est joli. On rentre dans la salle "de spectacle". ouh la la, 98% de Japonais, loi moitier en kimono!! hummm bon bah on verra!

introduction, remerciement et blablablah dans les 2 langues. En fait ce soir est un test car ils veulent faire ça à Dundas square en été 2008!! On regarde un petit reportage sur la villa de Hachiman et du festival en question. Je commence à comprendre.

Petite démo de danse des personnes venant de Gujo Hachiman. A peine commencée, les japonais(-e)s en kimono se lèvent et commencent à danser aussi.
La grand-mère japonaise à côté de moi me dit d'y aller. non mais ça va pas?? Puis vraiment tout le monde y va!! alors bon finalement je me lance! et c'est parti. On nous apprendra les 7 danses: explications des mouvements dans les 2 langues puis on le fait!
et à la fin on enchaînera les 7!! waouh! pas facile tout ça! c'est un bon workout!!
Et j'ai obtenu mon certificat avec les félicitations du danseur de la photo et de ma prof de Japonais!!

Des gâteux à la pâte de haricots rouge était servie ensuite, hummm j'adore. Ma prof était très étonnée. Elle m'a dit que j'étais prête à partir au Japon! euhhh, à voir!
