North Korea

A STATE OF MIND (UK, 2004) offers a revealing look at the lives and beliefs of the citizens of one of the world’s only remaining communist dictatorships. Isolated from outside influences, North Korean society is unmistakably one of the most secretive and little understood in the world. Now Westerners are offered an unusually intimate glimpse at the country’s people and culture. A STATE OF MIND captures the experiences of two young gymnasts, Pak Hyon Sun, 13, and her teammate Kim Song Yun, 11, as they prepare for the 2003 Mass Games, an enormous spectacle paying homage to North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. A symbolic demonstration of the surrender of the individual to the nation, the Mass Games feature over 6,000 performers and 40 shows. This colorful display of acrobatics is the world's largest and most elaborate choreographed gymnastics performance. Gordon follows the schoolgirls and their families over an eight month period, from the moment they awake, throughout their school day, and then on to their grueling practices. While on the surface, these schoolgirls could be dedicated children anywhere, it becomes shocking clear that their devotion to Kim Jong-Il and their hatred of America has deeply shaped their young lives. 94 min.
